Our Homeschool Room

Our house has been in between two vacant houses for a couple of years, until a family moved in the other side of the house a few months earlier. The neighborhood that we’re living in has houses that are attached to each other, so we somewhat share the same wall with the houses beside us. When the other house is noisy, that can easily be heard on the other side. So, with a neighbor now, we’re more cautious in letting our kids be a bit quiter. As you know, they’re used to play and laugh out loud since we were ‘alone’ in our area. And just yesterday, my daughter came... 

I think every parent would wish that their children would spend more time reading books than watching cartoons or playing with the computer. I have one who actually does that, but then I think my child reads too much. It’s like all she does is read all day. Her brother who likes to play more than anything would actually have to make ‘appointments’ with her so she can spare some time to play together. For the sake of my daughter’s eyes,we try to regulate her reading time, but then she gets crabby and whiney when we take out her book. And since she’s a certified bookworm,... 

Yesterday, my friends and I went on a girl’s day out and brought my daughter along. There were 6 of us and we had the whole afternoon by ourselves. After eating in Mcdonalds and getting tired of walking around the mall, we decided to check if they have English movies at the Cinema. They had animated movies which my girl could have enjoyed but they’re all dubbed in Thai. The only English movie available was Taken 2 which is an action movie. When we asked the counter whether an 8 year old could watch the movie, they said, ‘yes’ but she has to pay the full price. I was actually... 

Since my daughter is more of an independent learner now. It’s easier for me to homeschool her. Most of the time, I just assign her a few readings on her History and Science subjects and then I just spend time of review with her to check on her understanding of the subject. For a long time, I’ve been using naration as her review and a few times I let her have some subjective quizzes. But recently, I’ve been a bit more creative and asked her to draw, create comic strips and even fiction stories ( for history subjects) based on her readings. We never get tired of going to the zoo. Each trip to the zoo is indeed a different experience to us. And I love the excitement from our kids as they come face to face with the animals that they normally would just read about from their books. Last month, we went to Chiang Mai Zoo. Chiang Mai Zoo is huge and we didn’t even get a chance to walk around the whole zoo. We just chose the places where we wanted to go and then took the Monorail and the shuttle bus to go around it. Of the many things that was featured in Chiang Mai zoo, I think they enjoyed seeing the Panda and riding the elephant...
